At 5th Element Wellness we strongly believe the way of a healthy future in this day and age of ever increasing toxins and stress needs to start well before conception. If one has the opportunity to evaluate the timing of their pregnancy, this option is for you. The female and male egg and sperm begin the maturation process approximately 100 days prior to conception. However, it is known that 100 days is not enough time to completely detox the body of chemicals, metals, toxins or treat any underlying conditions that may affect the pregnancy or child.
That is why we have created the 5e PRE CONCEPTION WELLNESS PROGRAM and would hope to have at least 6 months to a year to prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy.
Its estimated that approximately 15-25% of all pregnancies end in known miscarriages. We are also seeing an influx of children with developmental disabilities and disorders from birth. To breakdown why we believe in the importance of detoxing and the healing of the body PRIOR to conceiving a child, we need to understand a little bit about the mother’s body (the housing unit for the unborn), the placenta and umbilical cord and their role in providing adequate support to continue a healthy pregnancy along with the role the environment and toxins and pollutants have on our bodies.
THE PLACENTA AND TOXINS
The placenta which is the organ attached to the lining of the mothers uterus during pregnancy was once thought of by scientists as a protective barrier that kept most toxins out; however, this is no longer the thought. What was created to protect our unborn babies is no longer a match for all of these man-made chemicals and becomes a dumping ground for the mothers toxic body burden.
The placenta connects to the foetus by way of the umbilical cord. Food and oxygen are passed to the baby and then carbon dioxide along with any other waste materials are then passed back from the baby in the womb to the mother for her body to expel.
Yes, the placenta does carry the building blocks of life but it also carries a stream of environmental toxins including industrial chemicals, pesticides, pollutants, residues from cigarettes and alcohol and other drugs which can in turn cause damage to the foetus, during pregnancy. But it doesn’t end there.
The mothers detoxification system also discards toxic heavy metals into the developing foetus which in some cases has shown to be 8 times the concentration as it was in the mother. Metals will cross through the placenta also through breast milk.
The placenta also produces hormones. These hormones are important for proper growth and development of the child. Toxic chemicals have the ability to interfere with the way hormones are regulated and express themselves. A growing foetus is going through rapid cell division. Exposure to chemicals is of concern as some compounds mimic the effects of hormones that assist in development of the brain, organs and other tissues of the body.
Hormones are responsible for the way genes are turning on and off at the right time of development. The timing and exposure will be what dictates the numbers of fingers or toes etc one might have. The internal and external environment around profoundly affects the way our genes express.
Toxins that disrupt hormones such as Phthalates, Perfluorochemicals (PFC’s) non-stick coating in your pans and Teflon, PFOA’s, PCB’s and endocrine disrupters such as BPA and flame-retardants (pillows, curtains, clothes, couches) are present in the body of the mother and have been shown to cross the placenta to the foetus.
In several replicated studies, laboratories have found an average of 200 plus industrial chemicals and pollutants in the umbilical cord blood. Tests showed a total of 287 chemicals. The umbilical cord blood housed concealed pesticides, wastes from burning coal, gasoline, and other garbage. Of the 287 chemicals detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that: 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests and 180 cause cancer in humans or animals.
In clinical studies, it has been shown that up to 60% of what we put onto our skin will also makes its way into our bloodstream. The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Direct absorption through the skin means these chemicals and toxins bypass the body’s major filtering organs such as the kidneys and the liver which are the organs responsible for processing a lot of the toxin removal out of the body. These chemicals will also pass through the placenta.
PROTOCOL and TESTING
We typically will work in greater depths with a mother, although the father’s health is also important. After initial evaluation, testing may include some or all of the following…
• Immune & Antibody
Most humans today are faced with several stressors at once. Many different stressors including the ones discussed above can play a role in affecting the body. These come in way of mental or emotional stress, environmental stress, or stress on the body which or why we highly encourage a lifestyle cleanup along with our testing and specific supplementation.
These chemicals, toxins and neurotoxins create pollution and a body burden that permeates into the cells of our body and can also deeply affect the babies in the womb. This is why it is so very important to be aware of the quality of the food you eat, the quality of their water we drink, avoiding alcohol and other drugs. We recommend testing and will design a customised supplementation program based on results of tests.
